VOIP Protocols

To transmit Internet Telephony traffic, we need a protocol. Implementation of RTP is used in most cases. As you may expect, it is not the only one. A protocol, which can carry both voice and signal data is IAX. It caries them over s single UDP stream and eliminates a lot of problems while working with NAT devices and firewalls.

For working only with signaling there are several alternatives.

  • Cisco offers Skinny Client Protocol
  • Mitel offers MiNET
  • Magaco - protocol to control media gateway
  • The Inter-Asterisk protocol is used by an open source sever PBX and software associated to it.
  • Another protocol is IETF - newcomer which is gaining popularity very quickly.

There are a lot of different voice codecs to stream compressed sound.
