What is Internet Telephony - VoIP
IP telephony (Internet telephony) is a technology that insead of using dedicated sound
transmision lines enables routing of voice conversations over IP
(Internet Protocol) network or even Internet.
This eliminates waste of bandwith and circuit switching. Instead IP packets
with data are sent only when data needs to be sent - only when callers are talking.
This process is called packet switching.
There are several andvantages of Internet telephony.
Voice over IP (Internet Protocol) progress is much more quicker.
It offers lower costs, especialy for international, long distance calls, per call or even free calls.
Voice over IP offers a lot of new advanced features. Infrastructure costs are much lower.
There is very little or no telefony infrastructure needed, if network with or without connection
to Internet is installed. Becouse of software based functionality, "future proof" hardware can be used.
Internet Telephony traffic may be deployed on any network - for example local network, even without Internet connection.
There are several ways to use Internet telephony: Analog Telephone Adaptor, IP phones
and Computer to computer calls.
Protocols, that cary the signal over Internet are called VoIP - Voice over Internet Protocol.
